Comparison
Looking for a FasterFixes alternative? Here is the honest version.
- FasterFixes
- Free if self-hosted, your infrastructure
- UserWants
- One plan, hosted, no ops
What they are
FasterFixes in one sentence
Straight answer
Where each one wins
Pick FasterFixes for
You own the data and the server
Self-hosting means the feedback never leaves your infrastructure, which some contracts and jurisdictions require outright.
Free at the licence level
AGPL-3.0, so there is no per-month cost — you pay in hosting, upgrades and the time to run it.
Modifiable
You can fork it and change what it collects. UserWants is a hosted product you cannot edit.
Pick UserWants for
Nothing to run
No server, no database, no upgrade path and no on-call. The widget is a CDN file and the API is somebody else’s problem.
Screenshot storage handled
Images go to object storage with short-lived signed links, which is a moving part you would otherwise be configuring and securing.
Role-aware OAuth out of the box
The MCP endpoint authenticates a person and inherits their project role, so a member cannot do from an editor what the UI would refuse them.

Verdict
Which one to pick
The decision here is not really about features, because the two products want the same thing — user reports flowing into a coding agent over MCP. It is about whether running a server is something you want to do. If data residency is a contractual requirement or you enjoy owning the stack, FasterFixes is free and honest about it. If your time is worth more than the subscription, do not self-host a feedback tool.
UserWants is for
Teams who want the MCP workflow without running infrastructure
FasterFixes is for
Teams with data residency requirements or a preference for self-hosting
FAQ
Before you switch
- Why pay when FasterFixes is free?
- Because AGPL is free as in licence, not free as in effort. You are running a server, a database and object storage for the screenshots, plus upgrades and backups. For most small teams that is more expensive than a subscription once the hours are counted.
- Can I self-host UserWants?
- No. It is a hosted product, and if your requirement is that feedback never leaves your own infrastructure then FasterFixes is the correct answer and you should take it. That requirement is real and no amount of features substitutes for it.
- Are the MCP servers equivalent?
- Both give a coding agent read and write access over MCP. UserWants exposes three tools deliberately — list, read, set status — because more tools measurably make an agent worse at picking the right one, and authenticates each person through OAuth rather than a shared key.
Try it beside FasterFixes.
Paste the tag on the same site and run both for a sprint. The reports arrive in parallel and nothing about your current setup changes.
